This depends on how often you use your fireplace or stove. Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs should be done as necessary.
You should clean your chimney before the start of the burning season during the spring, summer or early fall which is the best time to get your chimney inspection and/or chimney cleaning. Before building a fire or starting up your furnace due to weather changes call Chimney Mike, is the time to call your chimney sweep.
How do I know what type of fireplace I have and is it safe to burn gas logs in it?
You need to know if you have a wood burning or a fireplace that is only designed to burn gas. If you have a wood burning fireplace, chances are you can install gas logs. There are exceptions to the rule for example if you have a vent-less firebox.
Look inside of your fireplace, if you see any metal parts aside from the damper then you may have a prefabricated fireplace.
